I have an Apple eMac G4 desktop computer. This is not a new machine, but it has worked well until recently. Suddenly, I have started having some serious problems with the machine. What is happening is that I start up the eMac, and it will run through the boot screens and then suddenly lands on the desktop screen. I can see the photograph from my files which I use as a backdrop, but then I get nothing else at all. There is no menu, no dock, and no icons available. I usually have a few desktop icons on the screen, and none of them are visible. I can’t get into Utilities or Get Info, and in fact the background is unresponsive, as though the system is frozen (although I can still use the mouse). The files must be there, in order to load up the picture, but nothing else is visible. I have data on the hard drive which I need for a client discussion, and I am not currently able to extract the data at all.
I have a problem with an eMac G4 which I recently tried to upgrade. I took the data from the old OS, and put it onto a USB drive. I then removed the old OS and installed a new one. However, after running the install disk, it then asked me to restart the computer, I did this, and the installation now says that it has failed, after a system failure. Since that time, I have not been able to get onto the computer to access the USB data files. Instead, all I can get is a sad face and a question mark. I wanted to try another install, but the CD tray won’t open. I also can’t get it to respond when I put in the USB flash drive. I need to be able to use the computer to view the data I have saved, which includes photographs and music as well as written documents.
