What repair can reach, and what it cannot.

Electronics: properly fixableMost drives that show no sign of life have a dead PCB, a shorted TVS diode or a failed USB bridge chip behind them, and every one of those is a repair in the proper sense. It is the news you want.
Firmware: fixable with the right kitA corrupted translator or service-area module will make a mechanically healthy drive report 0GB, or drop off the bus completely. Getting at those structures takes dedicated firmware hardware. Nothing you can download goes anywhere near them.
Mechanics: one pass, no moreA donor head stack fitted, a seized spindle freed, heads eased off a platter they have come to rest on — each of those buys enough working life for a single complete copy. The drive does not outlive the job.
The end of the PCB swapEvery drive is calibrated on the production line, and the adaptive values that come out of it live in a ROM on that drive's own board. Slide somebody else's board beneath it and what the heads report is noise. That trick stopped working about twenty years ago.

What the first look turns up

  • People say 'repair' and mean 'recovery' — what is wanted is the contents back, not a working mechanism. We answer the question underneath the words, and state which of the two your drive needs.
  • The quiet drive swap — there is one reason a laptop comes back working perfectly after a 'repair', and it is that an empty disk now sits where yours used to be. Ask what happened to the original.
  • Board faults cost the least — a spike on the supply kills the electronics and leaves the platters untouched, and jobs of that shape are the quickest and cheapest that go through here.
  • New heads end the drive's working life — the operation buys reading time, not dependability, and whoever tells you otherwise is booking your next failure in advance.

In writing, and stood behind: the electronics and the firmware are properly mendable. Heads and motors get patched to last one copy and nothing beyond it. A scored platter surface cannot be read past by any lab anywhere, whatever the adverts say. None of that changes with age, and drives carrying IBM, HGST, Hitachi and Fujitsu labels still turn up at this bench from across Birmingham and the West Midlands. A 'repair' shop sent the laptop back, and the owner's files were gone

A Birmingham student got the laptop back running sweetly, on a brand-new disk holding nothing at all. The original, written off as dead, sat in a drawer at home, still clicking. Donor heads went in, and inside two days every essay and photograph was on the replacement disk the shop had fitted.

  • Switch it off at the first odd noise
  • Insist the old disk comes back to you after any repair

Can a failed hard drive really be repaired?

Two parts of it can. A board is rebuilt and a damaged service-area module put back in order — both proper repairs. The moving parts are a different story: donor heads are only asked to survive one pass over the platters, and the drive is scrapped afterwards rather than sent home. Either way you end up with a copy on new media.

Where exactly does repair stop and recovery start?

A repair sets out to give you a working device back. A recovery goes after the contents and writes the device off. Once a drive has genuinely failed only the second is on the table, which is how a laptop comes home from a 'repair' running beautifully with none of your files on it.

Does a replacement PCB bring the drive back?

Very seldom, and never by itself. Every board holds a small ROM full of adaptive values measured against one particular mechanism, so that chip has to come off your original and go onto the replacement before the platters read as anything but noise. That is soldering work, done at a bench.

Would a new drive not work out cheaper than all this?

New disks are cheap, which is exactly why that comparison misses the point. A recovery buys you the contents, handed over on hardware that works. Paying to put a failed disk back into service buys you a part no sensible person would trust with anything again.

Nothing more is lost while the power stays off.
