Soaked, damp or smoke-damaged

Water and fire damage in Birmingham. The sealed part usually comes through.

Pull a drive out of a flooded or burnt-out machine and it is usually the one component worth keeping. The recording surfaces sit behind a seal; water does not reach them and the heat rarely gets that far. The harm comes from a mains lead, an airing cupboard, or three days on a shelf while dissolved salts crystallise on the contacts. Leave it off, leave it wet, bag it, post it.

What the damage can and cannot reach.

What water gets toNot the platters, in most cases. They are sealed in and come out of a submersion readable. It is the exposed side that suffers — the board, the connector, the contact strip — and every one of those is something you can clean up or swap out.
What the fire takesThe board takes it. Platters sit through temperatures that destroy plastics and solder long before they are troubled. A scorched board comes off, a donor goes on, your ROM chip moves over.
Three kinds of waterMains water out of a split pipe is the easy one. Floodwater is worse, because it arrives with silt and whatever the drains had in them. Salt is worse again: chloride does not stop at the electronics, it goes for the coating. All three want bagging wet.
What the smoke leavesA fire does its second lot of damage on the way down, as the smoke cools and settles an acidic, gritty film into every seam and vent. Start a drive in that condition and it grinds that grit across its own surfaces. Clean first, power later.

Kept wet on purpose

A wet drive stays wet in transit, sealed in a bag. Let it dry on the journey and every mineral the water was carrying is left sitting on the contacts. Fire jobs come in as found, soot included.

What the first look turns up

  • Saturday counts — corrosion keeps no office hours, and two days on a shelf over a weekend is two days of it. Send the parcel wet.
  • One hopeful power-up costs twice — the short kills the board, then the surge runs on into the head preamplifier, and what was a clean-and-swap turns into opening the drive for heads.
  • Water comes in grades — a burst pipe is the kind one; floodwater brings silt and whatever was in the drains; salt is the one that goes at the coating. All of it travels wet.
  • Fire burns things in a useful order — the plastics and the board give up long before the alloy casing does, so the job is putting replaceable parts back around the one part nobody can replace.

Two things decide most of these jobs: whether anybody pressed the power button, and how many days passed before the drive was posted. Both are settled long before it reaches a bench. Little of this work is dramatic. A £2.7m scheme has protected over 200 properties along the Rea at Selly Park since 2018, but the drives that arrive here have usually met a burst pipe, a washing machine that emptied itself or a flat roof after a storm — and they come back as ordinary jobs, provided nobody dried them or tested them first.

Nobody tried to dry it out or test it, and that decision is the whole case. It went into a sealed bag still wet and into the post that afternoon. Contacts were cleaned at the bench, a donor board took the ROM off the original, and a full image followed inside the week. Twenty years of family pictures came back.

The questions that come up every week.

Is there anything left on a drive that went under?

Usually there is, on two conditions: nobody powered it up wet, and it gets to the lab quickly. What a soaking kills is the circuit board rather than the recording surfaces, and a board can be replaced.

Does the rice trick work?

No. The water that matters is inside a sealed casing where rice cannot go. What the bag does add is starch dust and grit around the connector, and the corrosion runs on for every day the drive sits in it.

Is a drive from a house fire worth sending in?

Often, yes. The platters are shut inside an alloy casing and burnt electronics are replaceable parts. What genuinely finishes a case is metal warped by the heat, or soot that has found its way in through the breather filter. Send it exactly as it came out of the building: shut, unwashed, unplugged.

Should I let it dry out before it goes?

No, and we know that sits badly. Everything the water dissolved stays behind when it evaporates, crystallising over the contacts and into every gap it was sitting in. Bag it wet and keep it wet until it reaches the bench.
