Dropped drive recovery in Birmingham. The fall was quick; what it did was not.

A drive that is switched off is tougher than people expect: the heads sit parked off the platter and the assembly can take a hard landing. Running, head and platter are nanometres apart, with the disc at 5,400 or 7,200rpm and no slack anywhere. Moving or still — that one difference decides most of what follows. So the worst thing to do now is switch it on and see. That first rotation is often the disk's last good chance, and it gets spent on a test that tells you nothing.

What the G numbers mean.

Parked or spinningThe datasheets say the same thing across the board: about 300G survivable while running, roughly 650G with the same notebook drive powered off. The drop is identical either way — what changes is how much the mechanism can absorb.
Heads touching the discHit a drive while it is turning and the heads drop onto the surface and bounce along it. Each touch can gouge the recording film, and that film is where the data physically sits.
Desktop units are the fragile onesA few 3.5" mechanisms are rated at ~30G while running, which is roughly a heavy knock on the desk they are standing on. Owners often say they barely touched the thing. On a desktop drive that is usually the honest truth.
Flash and SSDs after a dropA WD My Passport SSD or a plain USB stick has no platters and no heads, so it walks away from the same fall that finishes a hard disk. When one does die, look for a cracked joint, a broken connector or a damaged PCB — all of them repairable.

What the first look turns up

  • On or off is the whole of it — the same model, the same datasheet, two shock ratings hundreds of G apart.
  • The damage adds up — each restart after a drop pulls bent heads across the platter one more time, which is why the first power-up should happen on a bench.
  • Silence is not the all-clear — a head knocked slightly out of true can read happily for two weeks and then give up with no warning at all.
  • Laptop drives are built to travel; desktop drives are not — a 2.5" mechanism expects a rucksack and a bus, a 3.5" expects to sit in one place and never move.

What the manufacturers quote: a 2.5" notebook drive is usually rated near ~300G running and around ~650G parked, while some 3.5" desktop units are given as little as ~30G while the platters turn. Dropped on the job: a photographer's entire archive

The questions that come up every week.

Can the files come off a dropped drive?

Most of the time, yes, as long as nothing else has been attempted. Repairing the mechanism for further use is money wasted; getting the files off it is not. Donor heads and patient, low-speed imaging bring back the bulk of a dropped disk.

It was switched on when it fell. How bad is that?

Worse than a knock while it was off, by a long way. A head flying a few nanometres over a moving platter has nowhere to go when the shock arrives, and it can gouge the coating. Cut the power.

Is an SSD safe if it gets dropped?

Usually, yes. Nothing in there moves, so the damage shows up as a cracked board, a sheared connector or a solder joint that has let go. That is electrical work, and the flash chips holding your files are normally fine.

It carried on for a week, then stopped. Was the drop to blame?

Nearly always, yes. A head or a bearing left slightly out of true gets worse on every start-up, so the fall decided the ending and the restarts since have just brought it forward.
