The fault · clicking, beeping, grinding

Clicking hard drive, Birmingham. The sound is a warning; ignoring it does the damage.

A head that has lost track of its own position backs off to the ramp and tries the whole approach once more, then once more again, crossing the recorded surface on every pass. When the ticking begins your files are usually still there. It is the hundreds of attempts afterwards that wear them away, so the quicker the power comes out, the better this ends.

Each sound has a cause.

What the clicking isThe arm swings out looking for the servo tracks written into the platter when it was built. Nothing locks on, so back it goes to the ramp to try again. That loop is what you hear.
What the beeping isThat beep out of a 2.5" portable is current pushed into a motor that stays put — a bearing seized solid, or heads settled flat onto a polished platter.
Grinding is the bad oneInside a working drive nothing touches anything else. Hear grinding and a head has settled onto the platter, taking the magnetic film off it along with everything recorded there.
The margins involvedPlatters spin at 5,400 or 7,200rpm, the heads a few nanometres clear of them. Damage a head and it loses that clearance, comes down on the surface and starts taking material off.

Inspect it before power

Nothing is switched on until the mechanism and the platters have been examined. Where a clicking drive does have to spin, it spins with somebody watching it, in bursts of a few seconds, never left running.

Swap out what has failed

A wrecked head stack comes out and a matched donor set goes in, a seized spindle is released, and heads stuck flat on the platter are lifted clear without touching the surface. From then on the drive has one job: hand over a full image.

Read round the damage

A hardware imager works the drive lightly, skipping past regions that will not read and coming back to the worst of them last, until the copy holds everything the disk still has. All file system repair is done on that copy and nowhere else.

What the first look turns up

  • Clicking is a loop — spin up, look for the servo marks, miss, park, begin again. Left connected, the drive repeats that sequence until something inside it breaks for good.
  • A beeping portable usually means stiction — the heads have landed on the platter rather than the ramp after a knock, or the bearing has locked.
  • Grinding is the damage itself — a head is dragging on the surface and taking the magnetic coating with it. Nothing on this site is more urgent than that.
  • Freezing it, tapping it, giving it a knock — all forum folklore, all damaging. The one thing worth doing is the boring one: take the power off and leave it be.

One instruction matters: switch it off. A head rides a few nanometres over a platter spinning at thousands of revolutions a minute, so once something goes wrong there is no room for it to go right. Of all the noisy drives that reach this bench, what separates a good outcome from a bad one is how quickly somebody got to the plug.

A ticking Seagate with five years of till data on it

The questions that come up every week.

It is clicking now — is the data still there?

Usually it is. Clicking says the heads cannot find their position; it says nothing about the state of the platters. With matched donor parts and a slow, careful image, most of a disk normally comes back. The damage is done by the hours it runs on after the noise starts.

Does the freezer trick work?

No. It belongs to drive designs that went out of production decades ago. Cool a modern disk and water forms inside it while the metal shrinks, so you have added rust and new mechanical damage to the original fault.

What makes a drive click?

The heads are hunting for servo marks laid down when the drive was built, failing to find them, returning to the ramp and going round again. Bent heads, a dying preamplifier and scratched platters produce much the same sound, and only opening it up tells them apart.

Can software recover a clicking drive?

No. Whatever the program does, it does through the same broken heads — so it spends its time ordering up precisely the reads that will kill the drive.

Nothing more is lost while the power stays off.
