The lab · talk to us

Ring the lab or write it down for us.

Say what has failed and what was on it. An engineer replies inside a working day, and normally well before that. If you would sooner talk, the number goes through to the bench — nobody sits between you and the person doing the work.

Packing it so it survives the post.

Pack it tightStrip the drive out of a laptop, PC, Mac or DVR and post the drive on its own. Externals may stay in their cases; a NAS can come as it is. Wrap it so nothing rattles, and put small items in a padded bag.
Insured, tracked, signed forKeep the receipt from the post office counter and insure the parcel properly; once it leaves you, nobody can watch over it. We do not take phones or tablets.
Enclose the paperworkA printed copy in the box means the drive is logged as soon as we cut the tape — print the shipping form (PDF). We cover the postage home.

What people ask before they post a drive.

Where should the parcel go?

Put Manchester Data Recovery on the top line, then Peter House, Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 5AN. That is the name on the building, and a box addressed to us rather than to them can be turned back at reception. Use a tracked, insured service. The drive is assessed on the day it lands, and the return postage is on us whatever you decide.

Can I bring the device in by hand instead?

You can, though from the West Midlands most people simply post it. Birmingham has no walk-in counter, so anything handed over by hand goes to the intake bench in Manchester: Peter House, Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 5AN, open weekdays 9am–5:30pm. Phone first and an engineer will have the paperwork ready when you get there.

Is there an email address?

Use the form above rather than a mailbox. It lands on the support desk carrying the detail we need to open a case. Would you rather talk? The number is 0800 6890668, weekdays 9am to 5:30pm.

What goes in the box besides the drive?

The drive, plus any caddy screws or leads that came away with it, and a shipping form printed off and filled in. Encrypted? The password or the recovery key belongs on that form. Leave the mains adaptor behind unless we ask you for it.

Nothing starts until the box is in our hands.

Diagnosis costs nothing, one written figure reaches you before a penny of chargeable work is done, and the device is treated as the only copy it probably is.
