The fault · the machine lists nothing

Birmingham hard drive not detected. Gone quiet, not gone.

Drives come in from all over Birmingham with the same complaint: the computer no longer lists them. That is a report about a circuit, not about your files. Ask three questions in order — does the BIOS see the disk, does Disk Management, does File Explorer — and the stage it falls at names the broken part: board, firmware or file system.

Work down the stages and the fault names itself.

Absent from BIOSThe bottom of the stack. A fault this low down is electrical or firmware — a burnt PCB, a shorted diode, service-area code that will not load — and the platters are almost always untouched.
In the BIOS, not in Disk ManagementThe disk is answering properly. What has been damaged is the partition table or the file-system metadata, and that work is done on an image.
In every list except ExplorerThe volume itself will not come up, though everything under it is fine. File-system work, and good odds.

Find the stage it fails at

Nothing is opened and nothing is run for long. A few minutes at the BIOS, then Disk Management, then Explorer narrows it to one of three: electronics to mend, a service area to rebuild, or a file system to repair on a copy.

Put the electronics right

A shorted diode comes off and a new one goes on. A board too far gone is replaced with a donor, and your own ROM chip is lifted onto it, because the adaptive values written into that chip were measured from your platters and match no other disk.

Image first, then rebuild on the copy

As soon as the drive responds it is copied in full, sector by sector. All the repair work then happens on that copy; the original is shelved and left alone.

What the first look turns up

  • Each stage accuses a different part — a disk may vanish at the BIOS, reach Disk Management and stop there, or get as far as Explorer and refuse to mount. Knowing which of the three is most of the answer.
  • The TVS diode is a fuse in all but name — it shorts across the supply to swallow the spike, which is why a drive that shows no reaction at all often has perfectly good platters.
  • Two identical drives do not share a board — the adaptive values sit in a ROM chip and belong to one set of platters only, so a donor PCB without that chip is tuned for somebody else's disk.
  • Flash breaks by another mechanism — a dead controller or a firmware panic puts a wall between you and NAND that is in fine condition; a WD Blue SA510 reading 0MB is the common example. See the SSD page.

Worth remembering: almost every undetected drive that reaches this bench has failed in its electronics or its firmware — the parts that present a disk to the computer, not the parts that hold what you wrote to it. Absence from a list is a hardware symptom, and nothing more than that.

A WD desktop drive killed by one shorted TVS diode

A power cut in the small hours, and the desktop came back next morning with only one of its two disks. No spin, nothing in the BIOS: the PCB had burnt through at the TVS diode. The ROM went across to a donor board, and a complete image was off it within two days of arrival.

The questions that come up every week.

Can data come off a drive that will not power up?

Usually, yes. A board can be repaired or replaced, and whatever killed it seldom reaches the platters or memory chips behind it. Drives that will not power up are among the more predictable jobs on this bench.

Windows wants to initialise it. Do I let it?

Never. That prompt is asking to write a blank partition map over the one that records where your files start. Click no, unplug it, and let it be examined before anything else touches the disk.

The BIOS shows no sign of it. Is that final?

No. A drive missing from the BIOS has lost its voice, not its contents — the failure is in the board or the service-area code, and neither of those is where your files live.

It failed after a power cut. Was that the cause?

Very likely. The spike stops at the protection diode, soldered on to fail first so the rest of the board does not have to. You lose the electronics; the recording stays put.

Nothing more is lost while the power stays off.

Every extra power-up takes something off a drive that is already going. Leave it switched off and let the free diagnosis say what still reads.
