The Corner Snapped Off, the Memory Did Not.

The card would not come out of the reader. On it were two clear nights, no moon, nothing but stars — a year of watching the forecast, finally paid off, and not yet copied anywhere. A screwdriver went into a tight slot in Wolverhampton; the slot held and the card did not. A lump of plastic came away next to the gold contacts. The fragment vanished under the desk and stayed lost. From then on, nothing will admit there is a card in the slot at all.

What that means.

An SD card is mostly packaging. The working part is one moulded block, controller and memory cast together, wired to the gold pads through traces that hug the corner he levered on. Snap that corner and you generally take the wiring rather than the storage. Picture a terraced house with the front door bricked up: every room is exactly as it was, you just cannot get in the way you used to. He was sorry about the lost fragment; it made no odds to the job. A break also leaves its own evidence under magnification, and this one had plainly run out of steam a long way before the die.

What we did.

Start with what the crack shows

No fragment meant the card had to speak for itself. Under the stereo microscope it did: a bite out of the contact block, traces ending where that block used to be, and a crack that had run out well short of the die. Once you have read that, a frightening-looking card becomes an ordinary chip-level job.

The way in is on the underside

Every monolith carries a set of service pads on its underside. They exist for the factory and nobody publishes what they do, and each manufacturer arranges them differently, so the layout on this one was established by probing it. Wire thinner than a hair went onto the handful of pads that matter. The memory answered on a path the crack had never touched.

A dump is not yet a photograph

What a chip hands over is pages of data in the controller's own order, and nothing more. Error correction goes on first. Then the XOR mask comes off, the pages are put back in sequence, and a filesystem has to be rebuilt over the top before a single name or folder reappears. That gap between raw pages and openable photographs is the work, and no card reader closes it.

How it closed.

Both nights came back in full — every light frame opened and checked, and the calibration frames with them. The card is scrap. He was past caring about the card.

In short: A broken case is not broken memory. The chip is usually fine underneath, so stop using the card and have it looked at before you bin it.
