He Was Certain the Disc Had Gone.
The Iomega was barely a year old in 2012, when a surveyor in Bromsgrove closed his practice and moved every scanned client file onto it. It still takes power. The light comes on and you can hear it spinning

What that means.
Two separate products live inside one plastic shell, and they wear out at different rates. At the back sits a perfectly ordinary SATA disk. Ahead of it sits a small bridge board that turns SATA into USB, built cheap and cooled by not much more than the air that drifts past. When a unit takes power, hums, and still appears on nothing, the order of suspicion runs: bridge board, then firmware, then the mechanism. Smashed platters sit at the far end of the least likely of those three. The job of a diagnosis is to test the frightening answer, not to agree with it.

Four screws, then ask the disk itself
The caddy came apart in a couple of minutes and the Seagate Barracuda inside went onto a bench SATA port. His theory lasted about thirty seconds after that. The disk spun up, gave its correct model string and its full capacity, and answered vendor commands without pausing. What he had been listening to was a normal disk resonating through thin plastic.
No good news before the logs are read
A disk can look entirely well and still be quietly failing, so nobody rang him until the reallocated-sector counts and the grown defect list had been read off. Both sat where you would expect on a lightly used disk of that vintage. Sample reads across every zone came back clean, first time, with no retries.
Copy it flat out, then explain what actually died
The image ran end to end at the drive's rated throughput. No retries, no new defects, nothing that had to be coaxed along. That left exactly one part unaccounted for. The bridge board in the caddy had died of nothing more than age, while the disk it was supposed to be serving carried on working perfectly.
How it closed.
Scans from every year of the practice were opened, and all of them were complete. The recovered set went back on fresh media. The old Seagate went into a modern enclosure and was put on lighter duty as the second copy. Nobody mentioned smashed platters again.
