It Beeped Once, and the Copy Died.
The questions turned up before the parcel did, and fair enough too. A wedding videographer in Yardley was moving fifteen years of ceremony footage onto the Seagate when it quit: it beeped once and vanished from my desktop

What that means.
The noise was the easy half of this one. That beep is a spindle motor pulling at a pack that will not move, standing down, trying again, then quitting — current going in, nothing rotating. The broken seal was the hard half. Once another engineer has been inside, nobody can tell you from the outside what state those surfaces are in, and any lab that tells you otherwise is gambling with your money. What can be done is to fix the terms before the cover comes off: the assessment is free, one written figure covers the job, the exclusion for scored platters is spelled out rather than tucked into small print, and since this drive needed opening, half the parts and labour is payable up front, with the remainder owed only on a result.

What we did.
Costs agreed before a screwdriver is touched
Nothing started until he had all the numbers: what a free assessment covers, what one written quotation ties us to, the way scored platters alter that quotation, and the half that falls due when a drive has to be opened. Where a seal is already broken, that goes in the opening email, not in small print further down. His sharpest question got a straight reply — nobody, this bench included, can judge those surfaces until the cover is off.
Free the heads, then read round the old repair
The pack would not budge because the sliders had settled onto the data surfaces and stuck fast, pinning the lot. Lifted off and put under magnification, the drive gave up its history: a donor head stack whose part number did not match the label, a faint old contact ring on the third platter, and debris of a sort that has no place inside a sealed assembly.
One sitting, for as long as the drive allows
Released, the platters wound up to speed and held it, so the image ran as one unbroken read with the power never cut once. Most of the disk came across at a decent rate. The old contact ring gave up next to nothing, precisely as he had been warned.
How it closed.
Fifteen years of finished ceremony masters came back, and most of the raw footage with them. One folder — his earliest weddings — lay across the old contact ring and gave up nothing; the five couples in it got a phone call from him. That loss had been set down in the quotation before he agreed to anything.
