It Beeped, and the Plug Took the Blame.

The micro-USB connector on this Backup Plus had been unreliable for a long while. It held only if you push it in and hold it up a bit to the left, and a wedge of folded card under the cable had lived on the bench for two years. Then the noise changed: light on, one flat note running on and on, and no machine in the Cradley Heath workshop would list the drive. Somebody locally offered to resolder the socket. He phoned us instead.

What that means.

A fault with a long history is the easiest one to blame, and that is the trap. A tired connector breaks the conversation: transfers that stop halfway, a disk that disappears then returns, files that copy across corrupted. It has no way of stopping the motor. Bad contact takes the signal away; it does not put anything in the mechanism's path. A single flat note held for as long as the power is on means the spindle is pushing against something solid, and on a pocket drive that is almost always a head stack lying on the discs and gripping. The trouble had left the plug and gone under the lid. Resoldering the socket would have mended the part that had stopped mattering.

Two problems, kept separate

Two minutes on a current-limited bench supply settled it. Draw rose and kept rising, the motor heaving at a load it could not move, and then the drive gave up and fell silent. A stall, plainly. Everything he had said about the plug was true and none of it mattered here, and as the enclosure had to come apart anyway, the socket stopped being part of the case.

Lift the stack clear and set the case aside

Under clean air the lid came off and there they were, lying flat on the discs, well short of the ramp that should have taken them. The stack came out and went under the microscope, and the band of surface it had been resting on carried no marks at all. After that the drive went onto a normal SATA port, and every one of those years spent propping up a cable ceased to matter. Nobody put an iron near the socket.

A single run, on a link that stays up

Spinning properly again, it read from the first sector through to the last in one overnight run: nothing dropped off the bus, nothing reset, none of the halting and resuming its owner had put up with. Almost certainly the best pass the drive ever managed, and definitely the final one.

How it closed.

Ten years of workshop life came back, all of it checked: every job photographed as it went, the scanned handbooks, the parts invoices. There are two copies now, one on the bench and the other at his brother's. The folded card under the cable has finally been thrown away.

In short: An old fault is perfect cover for a new one. The moment the sound changes, pull the power and leave it off.
