It Clicked Twice, Because the Heads Were Gone.

Ten years of pictures of two children were on that Toshiba, and for most of a year a family in Walsall put the trouble down to a bad USB port — the drive was only getting a little slower every month. Then Windows came back with a fatal hardware error and the ports were off the hook. A neighbour tried it and it never showed up on his laptop either; by then it would spin up, click twice, and shut itself down.

What that means.

Two clicks and then power down is a decision, not an accident. Before a drive can offer itself to a computer it has to pull its adaptive and calibration tables out of a reserved band on the platters, and heads worn as thin as these will not manage that read. The firmware gets two goes at it, with a recalibration in between, then gives up rather than work from numbers it cannot rely on. Those two goes are the noise you hear. The slow year beforehand was the same wear building up quietly, and the error box was Windows finally saying out loud what the drive had been reporting for months.

What we did.

The sound was evidence, not just noise

Two clicks every time, never three, then shutdown — that rhythm belongs to the start-up read and not to ordinary work, which puts the first failure among the reserved tracks. Under magnification the stack agreed. No chips, no impact marks, only even wear right across the sliders from a very large number of hours in the air.

The head stack goes first

With a stack from the same production run fitted, the start-up read completed, the drive stayed powered and reported its own identity. Mapping happened immediately rather than later, because surfaces almost never wear evenly across a decline that slow, and the map tells you which ones have reading left in them.

Copy it now, strongest surfaces first

A drive this worn does not grant a second sitting, so imaging began while the repair was still new. The healthy heads ran flat out to begin with, the doubtful bands were held back for unhurried passes once everything else was in, and the reserved area being legible again meant the platters gave up nearly all of it without argument.

How it closed.

The image came out complete, and the recovery was taken from that copy rather than the drive, with the folders opened year by year before anyone signed the job off. The Toshiba has been scrapped: a disk that has worn its own heads away owes nobody a second innings.

In short: A disk that gets slower month by month is giving you warning. Two clicks at power-on means the warning has run out.
