Fifteen Years Inside, and Not a Flicker.
One pocket-sized disk held everything a design and technology teacher had built up over fifteen years: every scheme of work, all the CAD files, video of every build my classes have done

What that means.
Silence is not a diagnosis. It covers three different repairs at three different prices, and from outside the case they look identical. Rule out the lead and the socket, as she had, and three candidates are left: the little translator board between the USB socket and the drive, the firmware written on the disk itself, or the mechanism spinning inside. Telling them apart means prising the shell off and putting the bare drive on a bench. Odds are on the least expensive of the three, because that is the one which turns up most often.

What we did.
Take the shell off and wire it direct
Out of the case and onto a SATA port, the drive answered inside a minute. The spindle came up clean, the model number read back correctly, and every service command got a reply. So the silence was the bridge board’s, start to finish. That little board is the only thing that lets a bare SATA disk speak USB at all, and when it goes it takes the lamp, the handshake and every sign of life with it.
Copy it through a port that replies
With the dead board out of the picture, the Elements behaved like a drive with nothing wrong with it. Full speed start to finish, not one read error logged, the factory defect list sitting exactly where it should. That is what a bridge failure ought to look like on the bench, and this one did, all the way through.
Send it back on something that works
Copied out to a new disk, the structure came across untouched: Year 9 in its usual place under Schemes of Work, the moderation folders exactly where she goes looking for them, nothing renamed, nothing tipped into one heap. The only change she had to live with was the shape of the box on her desk.
How it closed.
Fifteen years went home whole, arranged as she had arranged it, checked over before the parcel was sealed. The part that gave up had never held one byte of her work — a few pounds of circuit board standing between a teacher and the lot.
