What that means.
Almost nobody loses a machine to a power cut. They lose it to the power coming back. Restoration is rarely tidy, and the first second of it is rough enough to finish off kit that sat out the whole outage without complaint. Manufacturers plan for that. A cheap protective component bridges the incoming supply with exactly one purpose — to fail before anything more expensive does — and once it has, the board stops dead. None of that reaches the data. What you store on a hard disk is held as the direction magnetic grains are pointing in, and a direction carries no charge for a spike to find. Which is why a drive that has vanished after an outage is usually a working archive stuck behind a burnt-out circuit.

See how much of the board the spike reached
The sacrificial part is easy enough to spot under a lens once it has gone, and finding it settles almost nothing. The question is what the energy did after that. Plenty of it gets past and into the interface chip or the motor driver, so every stage downstream was checked before this board was signed off as sound. That check is the difference between a board that lasts the job and a drive that stops halfway through the copy.
Move the drive’s own ROM across to the donor board
The donor supplied working electronics of the same revision. What it could not supply was the drive’s own memory, and that had to come off the burnt board. The ROM carries tuning figures measured on the production line for one head stack and one set of surfaces — these ones. Leave it behind and the disk spins up happily, sounds perfectly healthy, and reads back noise.
Read the map before reading the disk
With the donor fitted the Barracuda identified itself properly, 2TB and all, and its defect tables were loaded into the imager before a single sector was pulled. The copy ran end to end with no rereads at all. That is how a surface behaves when the damage never got past the electronics.
How it closed.
Everything was checked and went back on a new disk, still inside the same week. The till machine and the office machine both sit behind a UPS now, and the supplier accounts copy themselves to a second drive every night.
