Off the Desk Mid-Write, Connector and All.

A Bromsgrove journalist was shifting her interview recordings — two years of them — off an ageing laptop when her foot caught the cable. The Canvio hit the floor with the copy still going and the socket came away with the lead. All it does now is grind for a second, then give up, and not one machine here will list it. She was right about why the timing mattered.

What that means.

Two identical drops can carry wildly different bills, and what decides it is whether the drive was working at the time. Switched off, the heads sit parked on their ramp, well clear of the recorded surfaces; a fall from desk height usually leaves nothing behind. During a write there is no ramp in the picture. The heads are out over the platter at flying height, the arm is in motion, and the whole event is finished before firmware could ever get a retract command out. Timing was against this one.

See what the landing left, before turning anything

Opened under clean air, the stack showed what a mid-flight impact normally shows: the damage is never spread evenly. Two sliders had clearly taken a knock, the others looked barely touched. One narrow band of scuffing traced the arc the arm had been dragged through against the surface — real damage, though shallow, and nothing like the ring of gouging that ends a job on arrival.

New heads, a map of the surfaces, then read to plan

A matched donor stack went in and the platters were surveyed properly. After that the running order picked itself: the sound areas were taken at speed while the new heads were still fresh, and the scuffed band deliberately kept for last, to be crawled through with resets to hand.

Treat the scuffed strip as damage already done

The band sitting under the heads when it hit the floor was taken last and crossed slowly, with the retry allowance opened right up. Most of it read. Windows never got a look at the drive at any point: the imager requested each sector once, politely, and did not go back for another attempt.

How it closed.

Nearly the whole archive came home. The cost was a handful of interviews that happened to lie inside the scuffed band, and each of those is named in the report. That half-finished folder, the one the laptop had not got to the end of, arrived whole as well, lifted out of the image long after the drive was off.

In short: A drive is never more vulnerable than during a write. If yours goes over, pull the power and stop there — every retry after that is taken out of the surfaces.
