Plug It In and the Computer Stops Dead.

By the end it had become a ritual in Erdington. Plug the Seagate in and the PC just sits there with the lights on and nothing moves until I pull the plug out. A folder window would open, then stop repainting itself. Pull the lead and the machine woke straight up. Eight years of interviews for a local history group were on that drive, and one long Sunday had gone on dragging a single folder of them across before it stopped altogether — which answered the question that mattered: the recordings are all still sat on there, it just refuses to give them up.

What that means.

The computer was fine. One drive was standing in the queue and refusing to move. Storage requests get dealt with one at a time, and a disk that stops answering leaves Windows to sit out a timeout, ask again, sit out another, with everything else the machine has been told to do stacked up behind it. That is how a spreadsheet that had never touched the Seagate came to freeze solid. And the folder he dragged across on the Sunday settled the question that counted: the file structure was still readable, and the interviews really were sitting on there. The drive had not lost the recordings. It had lost the ability to hand them over.

Stop drawing on what is left

That one folder was not so much recovered as borrowed, dragged out of a mechanism that was already running on credit. The counters put a number on it: reallocation a long way advanced, and the pending list getting longer with every fresh attempt. The kindest thing left to do for that drive was to stop plugging it in.

One quick look at a bad sector, then move on

The imager worked to a fixed budget: short timeouts, two attempts, then log the address and carry on. Healthy stretches came off at full speed. Whatever fought back was noted and left until the closing pass, worked in short runs one head at a time, so the drive handed over what it still could at the pace it had left.

Then play the lot, start to finish

It mounted on the first go, and eight years of interviews came off in the order they were made, one after another. Sign-off meant sitting and playing them rather than counting them, because a file can weigh precisely what it ought to and still hide a run of dead air that never got written to the disk.

How it closed.

Every folder made the crossing and passed its check, the half-copied one among them. The archive went onto new media, with a duplicate run off for the group’s secretary. The old Seagate is out of service now, and the PC has behaved itself ever since.

In short: When the machine only locks up with one drive plugged in, that drive has named itself. Take one careful image of it, then leave it alone.
