The Disk Answers at Once and Offers Nothing.
Once a month the Elements came out of a cupboard in Handsworth and took a copy of everything: the old camcorder tapes after we put them on the computer, the kids' school photos, every bit of paperwork

What that means.
NTFS writes every filename into one ledger, the master file table, and puts the file data somewhere else entirely, out on the platters. Break the ledger — a write cut short, a partition entry a few sectors out, a run of weak sectors in the wrong place — and the whole listing vanishes in one go, though nothing in the files themselves has moved an inch. That is why a disk which mounts on demand and then shows you nothing is, far more often than not, a filing problem rather than a mechanical one. Two questions came first, though: was the drive itself sound, and what had the chkdsk pass altered on its way through?

What we did.
Prove the drive is healthy before you blame the filesystem
Nothing was read in earnest until the drive had been asked, at firmware level, how it was doing: SMART history, reallocated sector count, the state of the primary and grown defect lists. No answer gave cause for concern, which matters more than the sentence suggests: a sound mechanism lets the copy run at full speed instead of crawling at salvage settings.
Copy it first — every repair is done to the image
Repair tools change what they touch, and one had already had a run at this drive. So the order of work chose itself: nothing further would go anywhere near the original. Working on the image, the damage turned out to sit in one unbroken band. The spare copy NTFS keeps of its first and most important records had survived nearly whole.
Give the unnamed files an order someone can use
Where chkdsk had wiped an entry out altogether, the file had to declare itself: JPEG, MP4, PDF and Office headers read straight off the clusters. Those went into folders by type, then within each type into date order taken from the timestamps stored inside the files themselves — a shape you can work with, rather than a heap of files with numbers for names.
How it closed.
Nothing was lost. Paperwork, school photographs and the transferred camcorder footage all came home, most of it carrying the name and the folder it always had, the rest sorted by type and by date. It went out on a fresh drive, with a note that the only copy and the machine it copies should not live in one cupboard.
