What that means.
Drives that are dying rarely go quietly. They slow down first, or start making a note you have not heard before, or drop off and come back for a fortnight before they stop for good. This one sounded exactly as it always had and then stopped existing altogether, which points away from the mechanism and towards the electronics that hand the disk to the computer — in a portable case, nine times in ten, the bridge board. A year-end and two VAT returns all fell due inside a fortnight, so the answer to that question was the difference between an inconvenience and a practice with no records. It went straight to the front of the queue.

Out of the case on the first day, because the calendar left no choice
The parcel was opened and the bare disk was on the bench within the hour. Everything it was asked, it answered correctly — the motor held speed, the firmware came back straight away, and test reads came off every head cleanly. That cleared the mechanism, which left the bridge board carrying the fault by default, and the copy started before lunch.
Throw the board away and you lose the key
These units keep the encryption key on the USB board, which means a dead one cannot just be swapped out and binned. In this case only the USB side had gone: driven directly on the bench, the board still answered, so it was kept in circuit for the copy and the volume appeared no different from usual.
Check it in the order her diary demanded
She emailed a list of dates, and the checking followed it exactly. The two VAT sets with the nearest deadlines were gone through one ledger at a time and sent back first; everything else was verified afterwards. A filing deadline does not need the whole drive, only the right folders in front of you.
How it closed.
Every ledger was there, and both filings went off with a day in hand. She changed one thing afterwards: the live client files now go onto a second drive each evening, before the laptop lid comes down.
