It Rattles Now, and No Machine Will See It.
The Expansion had spent a whole summer in a toolbox wedged behind the front seats of a surveyor's van — it goes wherever the work goes

What that means.
What she had already tried did half the diagnosis. Two computers, a cable out of its wrapper, the same silence from each — so the fault was sealed inside the casing long before she posted it. Now, a healthy drive has very few moving parts: platters turning on a bearing and an arm swinging the heads over them. That is the lot. A rattle at start-up means one of those has come out of order — a screw backed off, something snapped, or play where the heads should be held rigid. And every turn of the platters gives the loose bit another go at the surface.

What we did.
Find out what is rolling about
The lid came off under laminar flow and the answer was there straight away. A crash-stop had sheared off at the actuator, leaving its fragment rolling free in the casing, and the head stack had movement in it that no drive is built to tolerate, with one suspension bent out of line. Every surface then went under the stereo microscope, because heads that loose can land on the platter during any seek.
Rebuild the mechanics, then map what is left
A matched donor took the place of the wrecked stack and the snapped stop in one go, and the first thing the rebuilt drive was asked to produce was a map rather than a copy. It read plainly enough: five surfaces coming back clean, and a sixth scored right around its outer diameter. That sixth surface is the price of the extra days she kept working after the noise began.
One controlled pass, and then it is retired
It was read out in one continuous sitting: the good surfaces first, the scored band left until the end and taken slowly, with the imager supplying however much patience that needed. Donor heads are borrowed time, not a repair. The drive did its one job and was then taken out of service for good.
How it closed.
Five surfaces came back whole. The scored one cost her part of a chapel survey, and every file that did not make it was named in the report. There are two drives holding that archive now, and neither goes out in the van.
