It Was the Adapter, and It Had Been for Weeks.
For a month and a half the Iomega would only come up if the barrel plug was held over towards the left a bit
— a trick its owner had stopped noticing he was doing. He runs a one-man mail-order business from a converted outbuilding in Digbeth, and the drive holds every order he has ever taken. On the Monday it was stone cold, no light on it, no noise

What that means.
It had. A plug that conducts in one position only burns a small arc into the contact each time it shifts, and an adapter near the end of its life stops giving a flat twelve volts and starts giving dips and overshoots instead. All of that lands on the drive's own board first, which is exactly where the design intends it to stop. The protection diode takes what it can take, then fails short and drags the rail down to ground with it. The board dies on the threshold; the data behind it is never involved.

What we did.
The adapter goes on the bench too
Both were put under load. Draw current from the adapter and its output wandered and overshot, exactly what its owner had guessed. On the drive, the twelve-volt rail read as a dead short to ground, with the small sharp-edged burn beside it that comes from a spike and not from wear.
New parts, but the drive's own ROM
Off came the burnt components, on went new ones, and the original ROM never left the board at any point. That chip carries calibration figures written for this one mechanism; without them the electronics have no way of making sense of what the heads send back.
Clean power first, then one unbroken pass
Given a regulated supply, it came up as if the previous six weeks had not occurred, handed over its defect tables without complaint, and read from the first sector to the last without a single slow patch. That is the usual shape of an electrical fault: the damage is all in the electronics.
How it closed.
Everything came back. He tested it his own way — choose a year, call up the orders sitting under it, count them off — and the lot matched. The adapter went in the bin, and his question was answered in writing.
