Ten Years of Files, and Nothing to Swap In.
Grey screen, then the flashing folder with a question mark in it, and that was the end of the MacBook Pro. The shop was honest about it: we replace things, we do not read them

and every tenancy agreement since we started

What that means.
The shop was not being unhelpful. A service counter exists to name the fault and sell the part that cures it, and she got both, straight. Getting readable files back off a mechanism that has already died is a separate trade, with donor parts, filtered air and imaging gear no retail floor has room for. Age pulled in two directions here. No parts list from 2011 is still open, and nothing changes that. But magnetic surfaces do not age the way spares lists do. What was written on them is still written on them, and a mechanism talked into one last rehearsed run will usually hand it over. An old disk will forgive one attempt and punish the next, so the whole skill is in not squandering the first.

What we did.
Measure what is left before touching it
The heads were obviously dead within minutes, and the survey carried on anyway — spindle bearing, surface condition, and the defect history a disk builds up sitting in a warm room under a printer for ten years. Everything read the same way and pointed at restraint. No spinning it up to see what happened, nothing tried on a hunch. If there was one run left in the mechanism, that run would be worked out in advance.
A donor that had to match on more than the label
There is no ordering parts for a drive this old; you go looking. Ours came off our own shelf, and it had to line up with the patient on three counts — preamp, firmware generation and family — with the number on the label being where that check starts, not where it ends. Fitted under laminar flow, the disk came back to life, but not evenly: one head lagged badly from the opening pass onward.
Slow rounds, then rebuild the copy and nothing else
The copy was taken in rounds at a deliberately low rate. The failing head was saved until the end and given a rest between turns, and a faint ring of contact damage on that platter accounted for the lag. Everything after that happened on the image and never on the drive, and the HFS+ volume came back as a real structure — a folder per property, dates intact — instead of a heap of numbered files.
How it closed.
The decade of tenancy paperwork and property photographs went back checked, in order and opening as they should, minus a short run of images that had been living on the weak surface. Those were listed out by filename rather than quietly left out, and most are exteriors she can go and shoot again. The lot travelled home on a new disk with a second copy alongside it, and the MacBook has been retired to a drawer with honours.
