A Kerb, and a Tick You Can Barely Hear.
An open rucksack put it out onto a Handsworth kerb, and a case wrapped in rubber does not invite much worry. Twelve years of drawings and site photographs were on it. Afterwards it won't come up on either Mac
, and held against his ear it gave a single tick, a pause of several seconds, then another — faint enough to pass for nothing.

What that means.
Volume tells you about the box, not about the damage. Platter diameter sets it, chassis mass sets it, and on a Rugged a rubber jacket is fitted for the express purpose of damping it — not one of those things reaches your files. Take the housing away and the barely-there tick and the thump out of a full-size desktop unit are the same event: heads hunting for a servo reference they cannot find, backing off, then setting out again. Every hunt is one more pass over the surface your work is written on.

What we did.
Soft tick or loud knock, same treatment
It got no more power until it was open under the lamp. Inside was the usual damage, scaled down: touch marks along the sliders where they had come to rest, and platters that had got off almost unmarked. He had tried it twice and then stopped, and you can read that decision in how little there was to photograph.
Get the right heads in before reading anything
The replacement came off a donor from the same family and the same production window. With it fitted, each head was put through a test in turn. Every one of them returned data, though one trailed the rest on the weak-read check, so it was held back to the end and the pass opened with the best of them.
Rebuild the volume the way HFS+ wants it
An HFS+ volume keeps everything it knows in one catalogue file. Lift that off the image undamaged and you hand back an archive; lose it and you hand back a heap. The jobs came back named, filed by year, dates as recorded — not thousands of numbered files for somebody to identify by opening each one.
How it closed.
Nothing had gone. The check ran like this: mount the rebuilt volume, then open one job from its first year and one from its last, drawings and site photographs both. A complete result was on the table only because he stopped at two attempts rather than twenty.
