Ten Minutes of Spinning, So Out Came the Cable.

One morning the Backup Plus took ten minutes turning over with that little wheel going round, so its owner yanked the lead out, thinking the Mac had frozen. Two or three tries later it would not show up on any machine at all. She teaches piano in Dudley, and the drive rode to and from lessons in the boot of her car. On it were eleven years of recordings, the ones her pupils take home. Nothing anywhere else held a copy.

What that means.

Those ten minutes were not the Mac thinking. They were the drive reading the same sectors again and again, failing, and going back for another go. macOS will not put a volume on the desktop until it has read the catalogue, and on this disk the catalogue sat over ground that was breaking up, so the Finder queued behind a long run of retries. The cruel part is what anybody would do next. Unplug it, plug it in again, have another try — and each attempt drags the heads across the weakest part of the platter once more. Ground that only reads slowly today may not read at all in a month.

What we did.

01

On arrival it meets bench hardware only

From booking-in the Seagate saw nothing but bench hardware, and no operating system was allowed near it again. Firmware access made the fault plain: a widening band of failing sectors lying right across the area HFS+ keeps its catalogue in. That accounts for the ten-minute mounts. It also accounts for the morning the drive stopped answering.

02

The catalogue first, and taken slowly

What came off first mattered more than how fast it came off. Catalogue and metadata went ahead of everything, slowly, with retries held down, because those are the regions that give each recording back its pupil and its date. The audio followed in bulk. Worth saying plainly: yanking the cable out had damaged nothing.

03

Put the volume back together on the copy

Every step of the rebuild happened on the finished image, never on the drive itself. Get that wrong and eleven years come back as nameless fragments rather than folders labelled with a pupil and a year. Names, dates and structure came through with the audio.

How it closed.

It went back with the folder tree she had built, and she signed it off only after playing back lessons recorded three years apart. Nine recordings out of the worst of the band came back truncated. All nine are named on the report.

In short: A ten-minute mount is the fault talking, not a wait to sit out. Plugging it in again only repeats the reads that caused the harm; one careful image stops them.
