A Laptop Can Die Without Touching Its Disk.
The ten screws in the base of a 2012 MacBook Pro came out on a Tuesday evening in Selly Oak, an hour after the machine stopped responding: nothing at the magnetic connector, no chime, and I have tried two chargers and neither one wakes it
. Its owner, a trainee teacher with a placement portfolio due inside the month, did not fancy waiting on a repair quote. He found a teardown guide, and the Toshiba 500GB was out of the base before midnight, on the grounds that the work is on the disk, not on the laptop

What that means.
Two chargers and not a flicker from either one narrows it down to the power path, and the disk is not part of that path. Storage hangs off the supply; it does not sit in the middle of it. A dead charging circuit therefore starves a drive, it does not damage it. Which left the only genuine unknown: thirteen years of near-daily running. Whether that disk could still be trusted is a thing you can measure, so it was measured before anyone promised him anything.

What we did.
A drive that old gets no benefit of doubt
It never went into a USB caddy. The drive was talked to at firmware level, the only place a disk admits what it has been hiding: grown defect list, reallocation counters, SMART log, then test reads worked in from the outer tracks. The answers were boring, which is what you want. A few remapped sectors, timings that held steady, a mechanism aged better than its owner feared.
Healthy or not, the blocker goes on
Good media is handled exactly like bad. On a drive this healthy the blocker adds no time you would notice, and it removes any argument afterwards: the disk left here in the state it turned up in, and there is a log to prove it.
The clone does the work from here
The volume opened in UFS Explorer straight off the image — names, folder tree and dates exactly as he had last seen them. Nobody touched the MacBook again; no part of the job required it.
How it closed.
He had the portfolio and his placement evidence back with a fortnight to spare. Whether the charging circuit is worth fixing is somebody else's trade; the Toshiba, now tested and its condition on paper, has been given the lighter job of holding a spare copy.
