New PSU. Old Cable. Burnt Board.
A new graphics card needed more power, so a wedding filmmaker in Yardley changed the supply in his edit machine with three couples' films to cut. The drive lead stayed where it was — cable-tied down the side of the case for years

What that means.
A modular lead is only standardised at one end. The connector that goes into the drive is fixed by specification. The plug at the power-supply end follows whatever pin order that maker used on that range, and the next range can be wired differently with no warning and no visible difference. So a lead will slide happily into a socket it was never wired for, and here the pins expecting five volts got twelve. What followed is the board working as designed: the TVS diode went short to ground and burnt out, dragging the rail down and keeping the surge away from the mechanism.

Where did the spike stop
On a bench supply with the current limited, under a microscope, the board told its story inside ten minutes: a cooked regulator, a protection diode shorted straight through, burn marks around the pair of them. The part you dread finding damaged is the preamplifier, which lives inside the sealed body of the drive on the head assembly itself. The surge had stopped well short of it.
Matching donor board, and the one chip that matters
The replacement came from a board of the identical revision, but the eight-pin ROM was lifted off the ruined one and moved across. That chip is why a board belongs to one drive and no other: the numbers held in it were taken off this head stack and these particular platters. Leave it behind and the drive powers up, sounds healthy, and returns nothing readable.
Get the image while it runs
There were delivery dates on his job sheet, so the Data Extractor was already connected when the rebuilt board brought the drive to ready. Nothing in the mechanism had felt the surge: read speeds held throughout, no new defects appeared across the night, and a full image was ready by morning.
How it closed.
All three projects came off the image complete, and each film went out on the day the couple had been told. The old supply's leads went back with the drive in one bundle, banded and labelled so they never get plugged into anything again.
